Hello,
I am writing to tell you about an essay project on the theme of “What I needed to succeed in grad school, I learned from [fill in life experience].” I think that you, or someone you know, could be an author of one of the essays. The editors are seeking a diverse group of students and recent alums to describe how their past experiences helped them to develop the knowledge, skills, and habits of mind that lead to their survival--and success--in grad school.
The project website, http://survivegradschool.weebly.com/ has lots more information. The editors can be contacted at [email protected]
Please feel free to pass this along.

Hello,
How would you complete the sentence “All I needed to survive (and succeed) in grad school, I learned from….” ? We seek contributors to an on-line collection of essays. Tell us, and the world, how your life outside of grad school and your past experiences taught you the knowledge, skills, and habits of mind that lead to your survival -- and success -- in grad school.
We want to highlight the strengths and skills you’ve learned in non-academic settings: waiting tables, being a mother, growing up in a small town, raising a puppy, overcoming addiction, running a marathon, learning to knit, playing the bassoon, and so on. And we want you to connect those lessons to grad school success.
The audience is mainly other grad students, looking for community, solidarity, and validation of their own under-celebrated life skills. Undergrads thinking about grad school and faculty mentors will also find your stories inspirational.
The project website http://survivegradschool.weebly.com/ has lots more information, including a dozen essays.
Thank you,
Bridget Whearty and Chris Golde, editors
